Union sweeps Foresters

The Foresters baseball team finished their first road trip of the season with three losses, 6-4, 12-3 and 7-6, to Union University in Jackson, Tennessee.

In the first game of the doubleheader on Friday, the Bulldogs scored in the first to grab the early 1-0 lead. Jarod Hammel started things off for the Foresters in the top of the third when he reached first on a wild throw. Eric Schultz then doubled to score Hammel. Three consecutive Forester singles resulted in two more runs as HU took the 3-1 lead.

The Bulldogs stormed back to score five runs in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead at 6-3. HU got one back in top of the sixth to make it 6-4 but would get no closer as they stranded their sixth runner of the day to close out the inning, squelching any hope of a late-game comeback.

Eric Harpring and Andrew Drummond each finished with two hits to lead the Foresters at the plate. Ethan Tribolet (0-1) took the loss for HU giving up six runs, four earned, on seven hits and six walks.

The second game was a hitting fest in which the Bulldogs converted 16 hits into 12 runs while the Foresters only managed three runs on ten hits. Trailing 3-1 after three, the Foresters scored two runs in the top of the fourth to tie things up at 3-3. After back-to-back singles by Travis Frantz and Hammel, Justin Branock's bunt single loaded the bases. Adam Christner's speed was too much for the Bulldogs as he reached first on a bobbled throw which scored Frantz. Schultz then singled to push HU's second run across the plate but their rally came up short as they stranded three runners on base. The Bulldogs answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning to quickly regain the lead. They would go on to score four more runs in the next two innings to secure the 12-3 win.

Ty Mills (0-1) took the loss for HU. He allowed eight runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out two. Schultz led the Foresters at the plate with three hits.

In the final game on Saturday, the Foresters would put up a good fight but again fell short as the Bulldogs edged the Foresters 7-6.

After spotting Union four runs in the first inning, the Foresters matched their effort in the top of the second to tie things up at 4-4. Hammel got things started by reaching first on a bobbled throw. Branock followed up with a bunt single and Ryan Shell drew the walk to load the bases. Frantz doubled to right-center to score Hammel and Branock. A single by Schultz drove in Shell and then Frantz took advantage of a wild pitch to score HU's fourth and final run of the inning.

The Bulldogs got one back in the bottom of the inning and then scored two more in the fourth to take the 7-4 lead. The Foresters cut the lead to 7-5 in the fifth when Shell doubled deep down the left field line, Frantz walked and Josh Lanphier singled to score Shell. HU kept things interesting in the sixth by closing to within one, 7-6, in a stretch that featured a walk, a Drummond single and two consecutive walks that allowed Hammel to stroll across the plate but it wouldn't be enough as the remainder of the contest was a scoreless stalemate.

Cody Walters (0-1) took the loss on the mound giving up seven runs, six earned, on five hits and five walks while striking out two. Branock led HU with three hits on the day.
