HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The Huntington baseball team managed only six hits on the day on their way to a pair of shutout losses to the Trojans of Taylor University, 9-0, 4-0, Wednesday afternoon at Forest Glen Park.

After playing to a 0-0 tie through the first four innings that featured only one hit, the Trojans exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth. The Foresters couldn’t stop the bleeding as they gave up four more in the seventh on their way to being blanked.

HU threatened to get a few back in the sixth when they loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth but TU pitcher Taylor Luna worked his way out of the inning to deny the Foresters from getting on the board.

Huntington managed only three hits in the contest with Adam Christner, Blake Ayers and Austin Drummond each tallying a base poke.

Starting pitcher John Ripke took the loss for HU giving up four hits, five runs and two walks while striking out four. Brock Gower and Jordan Klopfenstein teamed up to pitch the final 2.2 innings.

The nightcap was a rendition of the opener but on a smaller scale. After two scoreless innings, Taylor pieced together a pair of runs via two hits, two walks a balk and an error. Two innings later the Trojans added another two runs for a 4-0 lead that would stick.

Christner was one of three Foresters to register a hit in the game. He also drew his team’s only walk while Josh Lanphier and Drew Adams accounted for HU’s only other hits.

Derek McKinney was tagged the loss. He gave up four runs, three earned, on five hits and five walks while striking out four. Brian Kirschbaum worked two innings of scoreless relief.

The Foresters will look to complete the season series with Taylor tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. (originally scheduled for today at 2:00 p.m.).
