Merryman named First Team All-Conference for second straight year
Short and Hinen also honored by league
HUNTINGTON, Ind. – The Crossroads League announced its post-season awards for the 2013-14 men’s basketball season and topping the list for Huntington was senior Shane Merryman who earned First Team All-Conference honors for the second consecutive season.
Merryman (Fort Wayne, IN, Carroll HS) currently leads the Foresters in scoring (21.6 ppg) and rebounding (8.2 rpg) and is second on the team in assists (2.5 apg). He tops the league in field goal percentage (56.7 percent) and offensive rebounds (2.83) while his scoring and rebounding averages place him 2nd and 3rd respectively among his league peers.
The 6-6 forward, a member of the All-Newcomer Team as a rookie and Third Team pick as a sophomore, has scored 1,982 points and ripped down 800 rebounds in green and white. He is currently 7th on the Foresters’ all-time scoring list.
Senior TJ Short and freshman Derek Hinen were also recognized by the conference for their outstanding play this season.
A three-year starter for HU, Short has saved his best for last. The 6-5 forward, an Honorable Mention All-Conference honoree this season, tosses in 12.9 points and grabs 4.2 rebounds per night. He has knocked down a team-best 74 triples and is shooting .454 behind the arc which places him 3rd in the league in both statistical categories. To date, Short (Antwerp, OH, Antwerp HS) has scored 1,043 points to land the 39th spot on the Forester 1,000 point club.
Hinen (Columbia City, IN, Columbia City HS) has been HU’s floor general this year and for his efforts was named Third Team All-Conference in addition to earning a spot on the All-Newcomer Team. He has started in all but one of HU’s games this year and is averaging a league-best 5.3 assists to go along with 13.0 points and 3.9 rebounds. He boasts a 2.29 assist/turnover ratio which is fourth best in the conference.
The 3rd-seeded Foresters (24-6) host 6th-seeded Grace College Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in first round action of the Crossroads League tournament.
