The men's Foresters tennis
team competed in the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Midwest Regional Championships at Aquinas College over the weekend. Freshman Vladislav Khudziy stormed through the three-day tournament as the six seed winning six consecutive matches to bring home the men’s singles championship.
In the finals he mounted a come-from-behind win to take down top-seeded Felipe Bedon from Taylor University in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 10-5. Khudziy will compete in the ITA National Small College Championships at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama. The singles championship will bring together the best eight players in small college tennis from around the United States. The tournament will be held October 14-17.
In other Huntington matches, seventh-seeded Augusto Velez made it to the third round of the tournament before losing to #5 seed Aram Karapetyan (Robert WU) 6-2, 6-3. Jose Hungria worked his way through the consolation draw where he lost to #10 seeded Juan Cardenas (UNOH) 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the finals. The Khudziy/Velez duo won their first three matches in doubles play before succumbing to Aquinas' Artaev/Hendrick 8-1 in semi-final action.
In women's action, Haley Neiderhiser made it into the second round in singles play before losing to Eva Delk (IWU) 6-4, 6-2. Aleksandra Spasic also made it through to the second round before falling to #4 seed Jamie Hilborn (UNOH) 6-3, 6-4. They teamed up in doubles action where they played through to the quarterfinals of the consolation draw where they lost to the University of Northwest Ohio team of Jamie Hilborn and Shaleigh McClintock 8-5.
