Hinen named Crossroads Player of the Week

HUNTINGTON, Ind. – Huntington University freshman Derek Hinen had a fantastic week on the hardwood last week and for his efforts was named the Crossroads Player of the Week for the week of February 17, 2014, in addition to being named the Forester Athlete of the Week.

In the Foresters’ 87-81 upset over #12 Bethel College last Tuesday, the Columbia City native poured in a career-best 33 points on 11-for-13 shooting which included six treys. He also knocked down all six of his freebies in the final 20 seconds, dished out a game-high five assists and swiped two steals.

He followed up his career night by helping guide HU to its second win of the week, a 64-62 decision over #RV Grace College, on Saturday. Hinen tossed in nine points, ripped down three boards and handed out three assists.

On the season, Hinen is averaging 13.3 points and 3.9 rebounds per outing. He also dishes out a team-best 5.4 assists which places him 14th in NAIA Division II in assists per game. He is shooting 51.0 percent from the field which includes knocking down 46.2 percent of his attempts from behind the arc.
The Huntington University Foresters compete in 16 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past decade, Huntington has produced 39 NAIA All-America honors and 213 All-America Scholar Athlete honors.
