Huntington, Ind. - Playing their last regular season match, things didn’t go quite as planned for the Forester women’s soccer team as the visiting Knights of Marian University handed HU a 2-1 overtime loss to drop them two spots to No. 5 in the final MCC regular standings.
After an evenly-played first half that ended in a 0-0 deadlock, Karina Maldonado changed all that just minutes into the second period when she dribbled through the defense and put a ball off the cross bar and in to give HU a 1-0 advantage.
The Knights answered in the 78th minute and by regulations’ end, things remained tied at 1-1 to send the game to overtime. Eight minutes into the extra period, the Knights found an empty net to claim their fifth MCC win of the season and a home match to open the MCC tournament.
The Foresters generated 15 shots, nine on frame, to Marians’ 18. HU keeper Samantha Barclay finished with five saves.
“Marian is a great team with some really fantastic players and I felt like we competed with them well today,” said Coach Burgher. “We scored on them early in the second half and to their credit, they never stopped fighting. They tied it up with 13 minutes left and then capitalized on their chance in overtime. I hate to lose it in overtime like that but sometimes it happens.”
“We will be physically ready on Saturday for the first round of the MCC tournament. We have to make sure we refocus mentally and emotionally. If we are good in all three of those aspects, we will be fine.”
The Foresters (10-5-3, 4-3-2) will play in the opening round of the MCC tournament as the No. 5 seed on Saturday. They travel to 4th-seeded Marian University looking to avenge yesterday's match. LIVE STATISTICS will be available at www.muknights.com.
