With the sun shining and the temperatures perfect for soccer, thirteen teams gathered for the 9th Annual Huntington 7v7 Men’s Soccer Tournament on Saturday, April 18. Approximately 150 current and former collegiate soccer players representing seven different university programs participated in the event. Three Forester teams faired well on the day with each showing well in pool play and advancing to the quarterfinal round.
In quarterfinal action, HU 2 avenged an earlier loss to #1 seed Manchester to earn a place in the semifinals. Cornerstone, the other #1 seed, and Indiana Tech 2 earned the second and third spots in the semifinals with exciting one goal victories. The final slot went to the HU Alums, who with 10 seconds remaining in regulation put an end to HU 1’s day with a diving header by Luke Caldwell.
Both semifinal matches were decided by one goal with HU 2 defeating Indiana Tech 2 by a 2-1 score while Cornerstone ended the HU Alums’ fantastic run with a 1-0 victory. In the championship game, HU 2 and Cornerstone battled the entire match playing some of the best soccer of the day. It was Forester freshman Ben Swartz that finally lit up the scoreboard midway through the match with a near post strike from the top of the 18. That goal was all that was needed to bring home the championship as HU 2’s defense secured the victory. HU 2 went 4-1-1 for the tournament and finished with four straight victories while compiling two shutouts and allowing just five goals on the day.
