The HU softball team opened their spring season in Pensacola, Florida and split a pair of games with William Jewell College, notching a 6-5 win in the opener and then dropping the nightcap 11-3.
After spotting the Cardinals 5-0 through the first five innings of play, the Foresters finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth and then exploded for five runs in the final inning to earn the come-from-behind win.
Brita Kuiper opened up the seventh with a single to center. With the bases loaded after back-to-back walks, Melissa Werling pounded out a single to score two runs. Aubrey Garner then took one for the team as she was hit by a pitch to once again load the bases. Katie Bowers blasted a double to left center to clear the bases and give HU the hard-fought victory.
Molly Long went the distance for HU to earn the win, giving up five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out eight. Bowers led the Foresters at the plate with two doubles and four RBI.
In the second game, the Cardinals once again struck first with three runs in the second inning. The Foresters scored a run in each of the final three innings but William Jewell got all they would need with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. They tacked on an insurance run in the fifth and four more in the sixth to claim the 11-3 victory.
Stacie Rawnsley took the loss for HU giving up 11 runs, nine earned, on thirteen hits and four walks while striking out eight. Kuiper and Jeanine Vaszari each had two hits to lead the Foresters at the plate.
