HU kicks off season with doubles tournament at Marian

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The twosome of Katie Johnson and Cassie Kasicki finished second in Flight B to pace the HU women’s tennis team at the Marian University Doubles Tournament on Saturday.

The Forester duo didn’t give up a single game in their first two matches. They blanked the University of St. Francis (IL) pair Michelle Biciste/Ashley Golda 8-0 and did the same to Grace’s Jayna Huber and Gabrielle Lawrence to catapult them into the finals against Lauren Paras/Hannah Elliott of Marian. It was a tight match that saw several lead changes before the Marian pair pulled out the 9-7 win on a service break late in the match.

Huntington was also represented in Flight C where Jessica Abel and Ciara Smith received a first round bye before playing in one of the longest matches of the tournament. After falling behind 3-0 to Marian’s Grace Neathery/Colleen Yager, the Foresters rallied back to knot things up at 3-3 before eventually succumbing to their hosts in a tiebreaker 9-8 (2).

A player switch was made for the final match of the day with Stacie Cressman teaming up with Smith to take on Tara Gnagy/Alyssa Inserra of Taylor to whom they lost 8-5 to finish fourth in their flight.

“All three ladies played strong and worked well together,” noted Coach Ferguson. “The ability for players to step in and play with a different partner opens up a lot of good possibilities for a coach.”

The Foresters open up conference play by traveling to the University of Saint Francis on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. start.
