After going 1 for 13 from behind the arc in the 1st half, the University of St. Francis, IL Saints (9-7) used a barrage of three-pointers to overcome a 13-point half-time deficit and hand the Foresters (7-5) an 85-81 loss in the opening game of the St. Xavier Christmas Tournament.
The Foresters fell behind by 3 early in the game, but worked their way into an 11-9 lead on a Jessah Brumbaugh free throw and jumper and two charity tosses by Amy Berry at the 15:22 mark. The Foresters continued to add to the margin throughout the half and took their largest lead at 44-29 on a Brumbaugh trey with just over a minute left on the clock. St. Francis’ Clara Graham hit a jumper a few seconds later to make it 44-31 at the break.
Early in the second half, the two teams traded baskets until a three-pointer from Kristina Yedinak got the Saints back within single digits at 51-43 with 15:53 to play. St. Francis completed the comeback at the 12:08 mark on a Kara Grossklaus trey that made it 55-55. HU responded with a 4-0 run, but three consecutive 3-pointers put the Saints back in front for good at 64-59. The Forester pulled within one at 75-74 with 2:48 remaining and were within two at 78-76 at the two minute mark, but St. Francis had an answer each time to hold on for the win.
The Saints had a balanced attack with 8 players scoring between 7 and 13 points. Kristina Yedinak topped the list with 13 point and Jacqie Storm added 12 points and a game high 12 rebounds. HU’s Jenna Donaldson led all scorers in the game with 22 points and Erica Yost added 17 off the bench.
St. Francis went 9-15 from downtown and 20-29 from the field for 69% shooting in the second half to fuel the comeback. The Saints also out rebounded HU 42-41.
