South Bend, Ind. - Heading into the second round of Bethel College's Battle at Blackhorn seven strokes out of first, the Forester golf team stormed back on Saturday to shoot a 293 and capture the title. For the tournament, HU shot an 18-over-par 594, three strokes head of second place finishers, Holy Cross and Marian.
For the second time this year, senior Jordan Dawes brought home medalist honors. He shot a two-under-par 142 (72, 70), to beat Marian's Preston Smith by one stroke.
Mickey Belt's 148 (75, 73) landed him a top ten finish. Matt Wilson finished just two strokes behind him with a 150 (76, 74). Josh Teulker fired a 154 (78, 76) and Devin Dale turned in a 162 (78, 84).
"Once again we battled back to retake the lead on the final day," commented Coach Green. "I don't really think that any of us thought it would be possible to win after we shot a 301 on the first day. This tournament was filled with some very talented teams, so we were very suprised when we found out that we won."
"Jordan Dawes played extremely well, but Mickey Belt stepped up and gave us a huge boost with his two day total of 148. I am really proud of the guys. They seem to be gaining a lot of confidence in themselves as the season goes on."
HU finished first with a 594 followed by Holy Cross (597) and Marian (597), Bethel (601), Ashford (602), St. Francis, Ill. (615), Calumet (616), Taylor (627), Bethel (631), Grace (639), Saint Francis (645), Trinity Christian (645), Olivet Nazarene (653), Purdue Calumet (657), Judson (668), Purdue North Central (729).
The Foresters are back in action on October 17-18 when they compete at the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Cedarville University.
