Gonterman, Thwaits earn Athlete of the Week honors

Huntington, Ind.— The Huntington College athletic department announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of February 17-23, 2003. Women’s track and field freshman Ashley Gonterman and men’s basketball junior Ryan Thwaits earned the honors for their excellent efforts during the week’s competitions.

Gonterman, a physical education major from Roanoke, Ind. (Homestead High School), was the top point-getter for the Foresters as they won the Frozen Forest Invitational on Saturday at the Merillat Complex. In three events entered, she came away with three first-place finishes. Gonterman, who tied the indoor school record in the pole vault at 8-06 in January, matched that jump again for a victory. She also won the 55 meter dash in 7.72 seconds and the 300 meter dash in 45.88 seconds. Gonterman was a member of the winning 4x2 lap relay along with Courtney Gullickson, Nicole Jacob and Erin Abbey. Gonterman is a Dean’s List honoree. The Foresters are next in action on Friday, February 28, 2003, at Anderson University.

Thwaits, a business major from Syracuse, Ind. (Fairfield High School), achieved two double-doubles in last week’s games (his fourth in a row) as he helped lead the Foresters to a conference season ending surge to earn the MCC regular season championship and the top season in the upcoming conference tournament. In Tuesday’s win at Taylor, Thwaits shot 4-for-6 with 10 rebounds and two assists to score 15 points. In Saturday’s must-win game, he shot 6-for-9 with 10 rebounds and five assists to score 16 points. He also finished the week with a perfect performance behind the arc, shooting 1-for-1 against Taylor and 2-for-2 versus Indiana Wesleyan. Thwaits is a Dean’s List honoree. The Foresters will open the MCC Tournament at home against Goshen on Wednesday, February 26, 2003.
