Foresters win big over Taylor

HUNTINGTON, Ind. - After dropping a 5-4 decision to Taylor University last year, it was sweet revenge for the HU men's tennis team as they returned the favor Tuesday afternoon with a 6-3 win over last year's second place conference finishers in opening day of league play.

Still playing one player short from the starting lineup, the Foresters didn't seem fazed as they tallied two wins in doubles action before claiming wins at the first four spots in singles play to seal the win. Despite the lopsided score, it was up for grabs early on as #2 and #3 doubles were hotly contested with each team coming away with a win.

These same spots in singles action proved to be critical wins for the Foresters as Jose Hungria dropped his first set at the #2 spot before bouncing back to claim the three-set win. Joseph Straznicky outlasted Carlos Guarin in a thrilling first set and then blanked him in the second set to claim the win at No. 3 singles and tilt the match in HU’s favor.

The day's biggest battle came at No. 5 singles where Zakk Sparks and Wes Nitzche traded sets before heading into a hard fought third set tiebreak under the lights where Nitzche finally outlasted Sparks for the win.

The Foresters hope to carry this momentum into Friday's match when they host the University of Saint Francis at 4:00 p.m.
