The Foresters battled against the odds to go undefeated in its own Huntington University Tournament over the weekend. HU opened the tournament against conference rival University of Saint Francis to capture a win in five games despite playing without libero Denis Lehman and middle hitter Rebekah Brown for much of the final game.
With a 4-2 lead in the fifth game, Lehman dove for a ball and split her chin open on the floor requiring four stitches. On the very next play Brown went down with a knee injury. HU hung in there to get the win. Brittney Smelser led Huntington with 17 kills followed by Amanda Meyers with 11 and Rebekah Brown with nine. Alyssa Schroeder chipped in a game-high 51 assists, three blocks and three aces. “Saint Francis put up a pretty big block and I thought we did a nice job of hitting around them,” said Coach Schroeder. “Alyssa did a great job moving the ball around keeping all of our hitters involved in the offense.”
In the second game HU was forced to switch up the line-up because of Brown’s absence but eventually came up with a 25-21, 22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-13 win over Cardinal Stritch University. Freshman Katie Bowers stepped in and did a great job finishing with 10 kills, 10 digs and two aces. Smelser led the way with 11 kills and 20 digs while Schroeder finished with 39 assists. Lehman was back in action to record 20 digs.
The Foresters had no trouble disposing of Purdue North Central in 3 games, 26-24, 25-14, 25-18. Katie Bowers led the way for the Foresters with 10 kills and 12 digs followed by Smelser with nine kills and 10 digs. Schroeder recorded 29 assists, 3 blocks and three aces. Stacie Hoffman led the team with 6 blocks. “After a slow start we really got rolling,” described Coach Schroeder. “We took Purdue North Central out of every part of the game.”
With these wins, the Foresters are 8-6. They will host Marian University on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
