Foresters sweep Cougars

The Forester baseball team completed a four-game sweep over the University of Saint Francis by picking up two wins on Saturday at Cougar Field, 11-0 and 7-5, to close out regular season play.

Game one saw the Foresters take charge right from the start and never look back. Andrew Drummond delivered the first blow when he sent one over the right field fence for a two-run homer that gave HU the early 2-0 lead. They went on to plate another run in the top of the first and added four more in the second to take a convincing 7-0 lead. After Eric Schultz drew a walk to start the second inning rally, Ryan Shell singled and Drummond dished out the next big blow when he doubled down the right field line to drive in Schultz. Travis Frantz took his turn with an RBI-single to add two more runs and then managed to find his way home after advancing to third on a wild pitch and crossing the plate on a fielding error by the Cougar short stop. HU continued to pound the ball as they scored runs in the fourth and sixth innings and added two insurance runs in the seventh while holding Saint Francis to three hits for the game.

Tyler Palmer earned the win on the mound for the Foresters. In six innings of work he gave up two hits and one walk while striking out eight. Frantz went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and added three RBI to lead HU. Drummond finished with three hits and three RBI.

In the nightcap, it looked like the Cougars were going to return the favor as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead after four innings of play but the Foresters pieced together a rally in the fifth to come alive. After three consecutive singles that loaded the bases, Frantz drew a walk to plate HU’s first run of the game. With the momentum clearly shifted, the Foresters took advantage of a wild pitch to score their second run and then benefited from a Cougar error after Jarod Hammel’s single to plate two more runs that cut the Cougars’ lead to one. HU tied things up when Drummond collected his fourth RBI of the day on a single to right center in the top of the sixth to send the game into extra innings. With the score knotted 5-5, Adam Christner doubled to left center to start the eighth inning. Schultz singled, Shell reached on a fielder’s choice and then Drummond delivered the knock-out punch with a two-run RBI-single to put HU on top 7-5.

Brian Kirschbaum held the Cougars hitless over the final three innings of play to pick up the win on the mound for HU. Schultz collected five hits to pace the Foresters while Drummond finished with a game-high three RBI.

The Foresters finished fifth in the MCC conference and will host Grace College on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. as part of the MCC Conference Play-In-Series.
