With two key players missing from the line-up with injuries and a sub-par hitting performance, the Foresters were still able to pull off their first conference victory 25-22, 23-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-7 over Grace College.
After winning the first game, HU began to struggle offensively. Too many hitting errors led to a negative hitting percentage in games two and three and the Lancers took advantage with two wins. The Foresters battled back and evened the match with a win in game four and then ran away from Grace with the 15-7 victory in game five.
"We did not have a very good game offensively, but our blocking made the difference," said Coach Schroeder. "Courtney Berger had a good match for us with 11 kills and four blocks. With the way we played as a team, I feel fortunate to come away with a win."
Brittney Smelser led HU with 14 kills and five aces and she chipped in 11 digs. Krista Spearman had a team-leading five blocks. Alyssa Schroeder dished out 35 assists and Chelsey Melvin tallied 18 digs.
With the win, the Foresters improve to 15-11 overall and 1-5 in the MCC.
