Huntington, Ind. - Despite a solid start to both games, the Forester baseball team (6-17, 3-5) couldn't hang on as the Knights of Marian University owned the series with two wins on Saturday, 7-5, 8-3, to complete the four-game sweep over HU.
With two outs in the first, Eric Schultz pounded out a double and eventually scored on a throwing error to score the first run of the day. Drew Adams's RBI-single pushed HU's lead to 2-0 but Marian got one back in their half of the frame to close within one.
The Foresters picked up where they left off in their second at-bats. Josh Lanphier drew a walk and came around to score on a double by Blake Ayers. Ayers then crossed the plate on a Jamon Hammel single to give HU a 4-1 lead.
Things were looking good for HU as they picked up their fifth run in the fourth inning but Marians' bats came to life as the Foresters watched their four-run advantage turn into a two-point deficit as the Knights hammered out eleven hits to score six runs over three innings as they cruised to the 7-5 win.
Josh Niedermeyer took the loss, giving up two runs and four hits in 1.1 innings. He came on in relief for starter Ethan Tribolet who allowed three runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three in four innings of work. Schultz finished with two hits and scored a run to pace the Foresters offensively.
In the nightcap, Marian picked up where they left off scoring two runs in their first at-bats but the Foresters came storming back in the second to take a 3-2 lead. After singles by Justin Branock and Adams, the Knights committed back-to-back errors to allow Branock to touch home plate and then Jordan Klopfenstein drove in two more runs with his single up the middle.
It was a quiet couple of innings before the Knights exploded for six runs in the fifth on four hits, two walks and a wild pitch to take control of game two and wrap-up the 8-3 win.
Dan Holcomb took the loss for HU giving up seven runs, three earned, on five hits and three walks while striking out three in 4.2 innings of work. Despite four Knight errors and outhitting Marian 9-8, the Foresters struggled to put points on the board as they stranded nine base runners. Adams finished with two hits on the night while Klopfenstein added a hit and two RBI.
The Foresters travel to Grace College on Tuesday for a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
