Recording their lowest offensive output of the season, the Foresters (9-4) fell to the Warriors of Indiana Institute of Technology 48-44 in first round action at the Taylor University Holiday Classic.
Hoping to keep their 3-game winning streak alive, the Foresters couldn't seem to shake the rust off that had settled in during Christmas break. Five minutes into the contest things were knotted up 7-7 with neither team able to generate much offense. It looked like the Foresters were turning a corner when Lauren Meese drilled a long three to take a 10-7 lead but over the next 12 minutes, HU scored only seven points. The Foresters were fortunate to only find themselves down 27-23 at intermission.
The second half was not much kinder to the Foresters as they came up empty their first 14 possessions. Down by ten, Coach Culler called a timeout to rally her troops and the team responded by putting together an 8-0 run over a six-minute stretch to close the gap to within two at 35-33 with just over eight minutes to go. The Warriors answered with a 6-1 spurt to go up by seven at the 5:57 mark. The Foresters once again chipped away at the lead and Courtney Beerbower's layup with 15 ticks left gave HU a glimmer of hope as they found themselves only down by two. But the Warriors connected on 2-for-4 free throws to ride out the win.
Beerbower was the lone Forester in double digits with 16 points. The only other double digit scorer was Warrior Yasmine Coleman who also finished with 16. Beerbower and Kelsey Green each grabbed 8 rebounds.
