Huntington, Ind. - The Forester baseball team (5-12, 2-0) opened up MCC play by sweeping the Cougars of Spring Arbor University on Saturday at Forester Glen Park.
In game one, ace Mitch Bowers went the distance on the mound, tossing a one-hit shutout to not only lead HU to a 3-0 victory but pick up his third consecutive win of the season. He finished with five strikeouts to just two walks and gave up his only hit in the top of the fifth.
The Foresters put two runs on the board in the bottom of third. After singles by Adam Christner and Eric Schultz, Jamon Hammel's RBI-fielder's choice drove in the first run. Drew Adams then smacked one to right to score Hammel.
Adams notched his second RBI of the day in the fifth with a sacrifice fly for the Foresters' final run. He finished the game 2-for-2 to lead HU at the plate. Christner finished with a hit and scored two runs.
In the nightcap, Huntington cruised to the 5-2 win behind the pitching of Xyan Adkisson. In four scoreless innings of work, he gave up six hits and one walk while striking out one to pick up the win.
The Foresters pushed three runs across in the bottom of the third. After back-to-back singles by Blake Ayers and Schultz, Hammel and Adams both drew walks with the latter resulting in HU's first run. The Foresters took advantage of a botched play to score two more when the Cougars misplayed Brandon Van Metre's grounder.
HU tacked on two more in the sixth. Schultz started things off with a double to right and Hammel followed suit with a double to center to knock in the first run. Marc Bowers then capped off the scoring with an RBI-single to push the Foresters' lead to 5-0.
Wes Carroll came in for relief to hold off the Cougars. In 2.2 innings of work, he allowed two runs on four hits while striking out two. Lefty hurler Will Barone polished off the final Cougar batter to complete the sweep.
Offensively Schultz collected three hits and scored two runs to lead the Foresters.
The Foresters are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Spring Arbor to complete the series.
