JOHNSON CITY, TN— Five Huntington College national-caliber track athletes spent Thursday morning at Towne Acres Elementary School in Johnson City, Tenn. They presented an assembly to first through fifth graders on the importance of character. Jenny Grill, Nicole Jacob, Jonathan Doyle, Cody Hannie and Joseph Waithira are currently in Johnson City to compete in the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) Indoor Track and Field National Championships from March 4-6, 2004.

The assembly marked an effort to support the NAIA’s Champions of Character Initiative, of which Huntington College is a member institution. Through awareness, education and community involvement, the Champions of Character Initiative develops an atmosphere of integrity in sport. At the assembly, the athletes demonstrated track events, interacting with approximately 150 children. Along with Huntington College head track coach Tom King, the group addressed how to effectively demonstrate the five pillars of the Champions of Character Initiative – respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

“This was a wonderful opportunity to teach children that there’s more to being an athlete than talent,” said Jacob, a senior psychology major from Van Wert, Ohio. “The Champions of Character Initiative represents the qualities all athletes should have to set a good example to those around.”

The national championships will get underway for the Foresters on Friday, March 5, 2004. Doyle will run the 55 meter high hurdles, Waithira will run the 3000 meter run and Grill, Jacob and Hannie will each run their respective 1000 meter run races.
