The Huntington University Foresters (6-2) used a stingy defense to overcome a slow start and down Malone College 56-47.
Early in the game, both teams struggled at the offensive end leading to a 12-12 tie at the 10:40 mark. The Pioneers then strung together six unanswered points to take their largest lead of the contest at 18-12 with just under seven minutes left in the half. Malone was still up 24-18 with 1:26 to play when Erica Yost hit two free throws to make it 24-20. A Brittney Bateman three at the half-time buzzer made it 24-23 at the break.
Courtney Beerbower got the Foresters going early in the second half with a traditional three-point play on a breakaway lay-up to give Huntington a 26-24 lead. Over the next three minutes, the Foresters put together a 10-4 run to grab an eight-point lead at 36-28. Malone cut it to four at 36-32 with 14:29 to play, but that was as close as it would get. Huntington’s defense then took over holding the Pioneers to just two points over the next six minutes allowing the Foresters to mount a 13-point advantage at 47-34 with 8:44 to go. Malone cut the deficit to nine a few times down the stretch, but could get no closer.
Beerbower led Huntington with 16 points and Donaldson and Bateman finished with 12 and 11 respectively. Kellyn Murphy was the lone Pioneer to reach double figures with 16. Nicole Feher chipped in nine points and a game-high eight rebounds.
After a shooting a dismal 38.5% from the field in the first half, the Foresters hit 14 of 26 shots in the second for 53.8% and finished at 46.2% for the game. Malone was 21-54 from the field for 38.9%.
