HUNTINGTON, IN JUNE 20, 1997 --- Huntington restaurateur Rocky Strickler has established an endowment fund that will support the Huntington College Athletic Department. Interest earned from Mr. Strickler's substantial gift to the college will underwrite perpetual Enthusiasm Awards presented to outstanding Forester athletes.

"These awards are designed to recognize unsung heroes who have contributed to their team's success," said Strickler.

Enthusiasm Awards are named in honor of each head coach that leads a Huntington College team to its first national championship. Strickler has previously created three such annual awards: the Freeman Award for women's basketball, the Swan Award for women's volleyball, and the King Award for women's track and field. Additional awards will be created as Huntington College coaches lead teams to future national championships.

Student-athletes are selected for the award based upon their enthusiasm, attitude, dedication and leadership exhibited in competition, during practice, in the classroom, and on campus. Recipients must be sophomores and must have completed a minimum of one full season at Huntington College. Recipients are selected by their head coach with input from the athletic director, faculty athletics representative, and coaching staff.

Each student-athlete selected for the Enthusiasm Award receives a personalized engraved plaque. A plaque bearing the names of previous award recipients is displayed in the Merillat Complex for Physical Education and Recreation.

"The Enthusiasm Award is an excellent way to recognize outstanding student-athletes who may not have received other forms of honor or national recognition," said Lori Culler, athletic director. "We are very grateful to Rocky Strickler for underwriting these important awards."
