Abbey, Christner earn Athlete of the Week honors

Huntington, Ind.— The Huntington College athletic department announced its Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 2 - 8, 2002. Women’s soccer senior Erin Abbey and men’s tennis senior Michael Christner earned the first-ever Athlete of the Week honors for the Foresters.

Abbey, an educational ministries major from Millbury, Ohio, led the women’s soccer team to a 2-0 record for the week. She administered two assists in the Foresters’ 3-0 victory over St. Mary of the Woods on Sept. 5, and followed that performance with two goals and one assist in the MCC Conference opener victory versus Grace, 4-2, on Sept. 7. Her seven-point week followed a career-high five goals in the 8-0 season-opener victory over Bluffton College on Aug. 31. The women’s soccer team is currently 3-0 overall, 1-0 in the conference. Abbey is also an NAIA All-American track and field runner for the Foresters, a two-time NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete, a member of Alpha Chi, a member of Chi Alpha Sigma (the athletic honor society at HC), and a four-time Dean’s List honoree.

Christner, an elementary education major from Shipshewana, Ind., was a key member to the men’s tennis 2-0 record for the week. He retired his St. Joseph opponent 6-1, 6-0, on Sept. 3 and his Tri-State opponent, 6-7, 6-1, 7-5, on Sept. 5 at no. 3 singles. Christner teamed with Kachinga Sinkala in no. 1 doubles to take two victories over the St. Joseph and Tri-State opponents, 8-1 each. The men’s tennis team is currently 2-0 on the season. Christner is a member of the 2001-02 15-2 men’s tennis squad that earned the prestigious HC Academic Excellence Award with a team grade point average of 3.453. He is also a three-time Dean’s List honoree.

The Huntington College Foresters compete in 14 intercollegiate sports for men and women. In the past six years, Huntington has produced 38 All-America honors and 60 All-America Scholar Athlete honors.
