The Huntington University Foresters (9-6, 1-2) gave NAIA Division II 5th-ranked Bethel College (14-2, 3-0) all it could handle, but came up just short falling 46-44 to the Pilots.
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively with the score knotted at 13 midway through the first period. Over a five-minute span, the Foresters put together an 11-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at 24-15 with 5:09 to go in the half. Bethel was able to whittle it down to four at 28-24 by intermission.
Huntington continued to hang on to the lead throughout most of the second half until two free throws from Andrea Selent gave the Pilots a 45-44 advantage with 2:09 to play. The two teams traded a turnover and a couple missed field goal attempts until Huntington’s Lauren Davenport was fouled with 6.7 seconds left on the clock. Davenport missed both tries and the Foresters sent Natalie Young to the line at the other end. Young hit the first and missed the second. Huntington got the rebound, but couldn’t get a shot off before time expired.
Young topped all scorers in the game with 19 points and was the lone Pilot to reach double figures. Beerbower led three all scorers in double figures for Huntington with 16 points. Jenna Donaldson finished with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds and Davenport added 10 points.
