HUNTINGTON, Ind. — Dr. Luke Fetters will give the final Huntington University
Forester Lecture of the year at 7 p.m. April 10 in the Zurcher Auditorium of the
Merillat Centre for the Arts.
His lecture will center on his passion and experience with the Chinese culture. His lecture, “A Chinese Servant, a Civil War General and an Indiana Lady: A Case Study in Personal Agency, Unlikely Friendship and Missiological Partnership,” will tell the story of Mei Ling, who immigrated from southern China to Portland, Ore., in 1872. Over the next 50 years, Mei became a community educator and Christian leader in the Portland Chinese community. His correspondence with Cora Loew, general secretary of the United Brethren Women’s Missionary Association, and U.S. Civil War General O.O. Howard reveals Mei’s remarkable ability to establish effective intercultural partnerships.
Fetters is the associate professor of
ministry and missions and associate professor and director of the
Institute for TESOL Studies at Huntington University. He is an HU alumnus and received his doctoral degree from Ball State University following a 10-year period of missionary service in Macau and southern China.
The Forester Lecture Series is designed to bring interesting individuals and topics to the attention of students and the regional community. The lecture is free and open to the public.
The Forester Lecture Series is coordinated by Dr. David Alexander, assistant professor of
