HU junior earns grant to build accessible playground for hometown church

HUNTINGTON, Ind. — Kelsi Schouten, a junior recreation management major from Newark, Ohio, has received a $27,000 grant from Little Tikes to help Vineyard Grace Fellowship, her home church, build a playground that is accessible to children with disabilities.

“It has been a tremendous blessing to make this a possibility for my church and being able to possibly make a very large impact in my community is exciting,” she said.

Schouten worked on this project through RC416–Grant Writing and Fundraising, a course in the kinesiology and sport leadership department at Huntington University. Adjunct professor Jennifer Pickard was impressed by Schouten’s hard work and her enthusiasm shown throughout the project.

“The course is designed to encourage each student to find a worthy project and write a formal grant proposal seeking funding for that project,” Pickard said. “Kelsi found a need in her home church and, as a part of our coursework, researched funders online. She found a good funding match and pursued it. It’s exciting for me to see her rewarded for her efforts.”

Schouten has about $30,000 left to raise for the playground and is continuing to submit grants to different organizations. Once the money is raised, the playground is estimated to be completed by September 2015.
