Alum becomes life coach for YFC's Campus Life
Kevin Lengerich

“I was planning to go to (Indiana University) and be a financial planner. After a spring break trip, … I just sort of picked (Huntington). I’m so glad I did. I loved my time here.”

The band on his wrist read “GODSTRONG.” It’s one of his mottos for life and something he tries to spread to his students.

Kevin Lengerich, a 2011 Bible & Religion double major in religious and Biblical studies, works for Youth for Christ out in the Denver area. His one goal: Lead high school students to Christ.

“YFC has been there, but Campus Life is pretty new,” he said of the small town of Brighton, Colo. “Essentially, the first eight months was just meeting students, meeting parents and meeting members of the community.”

For Lengerich, stepping out into this position was a huge step that took more than a year of prayer to decide. It was a different path than most of his fellow graduates. Many go on to get their master’s degrees or study at seminary. But Lengerich was stepping out on faith.

He originally came to Huntington to study youth ministries, but quickly discovered that his Bible knowledge was not at the level he wanted or needed. The switch to the Bible degree gave him the training on how to learn and study the text.

Lengerich first became connected with YFC in high school and continued volunteering into his years at Huntington. Today, as a life coach, he is trying to build the same relationships with high schoolers that first made him love ministry.

“My goal would be to get to a point where I have enough people and volunteers that we can reach the whole school and then the whole community,” he said. “It all starts with relationships.”

Lengerich says that one day he may consider going into pastoral ministry, but one thing is for sure, his time at HU prepared him for anything.

The professors at HU “took the time to get to know us as students and as people,” he said. “I was planning to go to (Indiana University) and be a financial planner. After a spring break trip, … I just sort of picked (Huntington). I’m so glad I did. I loved my time here.”
