Live audio mixing. Room design. Direction of a fine arts school. No, these aren’t job openings in the classifieds — they’re some of the many hats senior Laura Fears wore during her PRIME internship.
Fears, a worship leadership
major, worked as worship ministry and arts intern at Eastbrook Church in Milwaukee, Wis. Her daily work varied from leading kindergarteners in Sunday school and co-directing the children’s choir to helping out at the food pantry and performing in the bell choir at Eastbrook.
“Technically I am in the worship ministry and arts department, but I get to help out in all kinds of ministries,” Fears said. “I love being able to serve in areas that I am gifted, and I love having the opportunity to grow in other areas.”
Fears was recommended to Eastbrook by one of her professors at Huntington University. After she arrived in Milwaukee, she knew at once that Eastbrook was exactly where she ought to be.
PRIME is an internship experience designed by the ministry and missions department at Huntington University. The PRIME (Practical Research and Immersion for Ministry Effectiveness) program prepares students to enter the field of ministry after graduation. Students choose a location of their choice during the months of May through December after the student’s junior year. These students are then mentored by experienced ministry leaders.
“PRIME has been a great opportunity for me to put to practice all of the things I learned at Huntington,” she said. “Sometimes I think we underestimate the importance of our studies, but PRIME really affirms the importance of equipping and preparing yourself. I have had to do assignments at Eastbrook that were once homework assignments at Huntington. I guess our teachers really know what they are talking about.”
Now that her PRIME has ended, Fears is completing her last semester of senior year and is assured of where she’s headed next.
“I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I want to spend the rest of my life in church ministry,” she said. “I love the church, but I especially love it when the church boldly goes into the world proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ. My desire is to spend the rest of my life participating in God’s work in the world, and I believe that the church is an incredible vehicle to do so.”
