Chemistry Placement Policy
Chemistry placement is determined using the math placement level and high school transcripts, college transcripts, and standardized testing (SAT, ACT). The following table lists courses that have chemistry placement requirements:
Course | Chemistry Placement Level | Math Placement Level |
CH 141 | B | C |
CH 161 | B | C |
Level B is the highest chemistry placement. Students may take courses at that placement level or lower.
Students who do not meet the required chemistry placements for courses in their major have the following options:
- To meet the math placement level, see the math placement options under Mathematics Placement Policy.
- To meet the chemistry placement level for CH 141 or CH 161, students may complete CH 111 with a C- or above. CH 111 has no placement requirement and meets a core science requirement.
- A college-level chemistry transfer course equivalent to CH 111 or above may meet the chemistry placement requirement.
Students who need CH 141 or CH 161 for their majors are encouraged to meet the chemistry placement requirement as first-year students to ensure progression toward the successful completion of their degrees in four years.
